Featured in this lot is this "The Comet" scrimshaw sperm whale tooth casting by D. Hart. The tooth features a wonderfully and professionally crafted cast construction that shows a scrimshaw decoration of a three-masted vessel called The Comet a civil war era frigate and reads on the other side of the tooth as follows: 1831 - The Comet. The the scrimshaw decoration shows cross flags with a sperm whale and the vessel on the opposite side. The condition of this sperm whale tooth casting shows a chip to the tip of the tooth exposing the material its cast from and shows a chip to the base. The measurements of this cast sperm whale tooth is 6 3/8" x 2 5/8" x 1 3/8". The collective weight of this cast sperm whale tooth is 12oz.
