Featured in this lot is this 1882 copy of "The Ladies of the White House or In The Home of the Presidents" by Laura C. Holloway and published by Forshee & McMackin in Cincinnati. The book is an account of the social and domestic lives of the American Presidents and First Ladies from 1789-1881. The author says, 'In the historical works of the age-even in the biographies of the Presidents themselves-not much has been said of women who, for the most part, were powerful adjuncts to their popularity, and exerted great influence over their lives. ' This book makes up in part for that missing information. The book features a red cloth hardcover with black and gold gilt embossed lettering and images. The book is illustrated with numerous engraved plates of the White House, Mount Vernon, and portraits of First Ladies. The book is in fair condition on the outside with the front cover and spine loosely connected and a tear on the spine. The interior pages are in good condition with no signs of tears but slight foxing to some pages. The book measures 8 5/8" L x 6 1/2" W x 1 7/8" D.
