Featured in this lot is this RARE photograph of the last Arizona Ranger Sam Hayhurst, wife Mary Jane, and Son Robert circa 1911; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The photograph features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that shows a staged portrait of Sam Hayhurst with his family. Sam Hayhurst is considered to be the last active duty Arizona Ranger when a newspaper took up the story of the abolishing of the Arizona Rangers: "Former Ranger Hayhurst came in to Douglas warly last evening bringing with him an alleged cattle thief, one of the two for whom deputy sheriffs and rangers alike have been hunting for several days past, an alleged cattle thief whom Hayhurst caught in the Swisshelms. When Hayhurst had brought in his prisoner and placed him in a cell at the jail, he learned of the passage of the bill abolishing the ranger force over the Governor's Veto." - Arizona Daily Star Feb 1909. Hayhurst was also involved in a plot to spirit a man named Manuel Sarabia over the Mexican border to answer for the crime of murder; the group was caught and tried for the kidnapping. The photograph comes with an original museum tag that reads as follows: Sam Hayhurst Arizona Ranger lived in Douglas. The condition of this Sam Hayhurst photograph is well preserved with very slight wear to the photograph and some browning to the photograph consistent with the age but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The measurements of this photograph is 7" x 5 1/2". LO131
