Offered in this lot is this First Edition of "The Restoration of Paintings" by Knut Nicolaus, 1999 , publisher Könemann, Cologne, Germany. Thorough guide to the damage of paintings, as well as the causes of different types of damage. It also surveys historical and current restoration and preservation treatments by working up from the picture support to the paint layer to the final coat of varnish. A highly useful and well researched study of painting restoration, divided into four principle sections: Wooden supports; textile supports; paint layer; varnish. A storehouse of detailed and useful information for art-lovers, collectors, dealers, art-historians, and restorers. Data and methods are documented in a wealth of photographs, tables and captions, collected and largely photographed by the author himself over decades of work as a restorer. Knut Nicolaus was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1940. He was trained to be a picture restorer in Munich, Florence, and London. From 1965 to 1986 he was restorer-in-chief at the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum in Braunschweig. Nicolaus is a world-renowned expert in issues relating to picture conservation, damage and restoration. In 1986 the college of Applied Sciences in Cologne appointed him to develop a new faculty, Restoration and Conservation of Art and Cultural Works. This is an indispensable book on the subject, and it is truly in magnificent condition. This black cloth bound gold gilt hardcover is in very nice overall condition, stamped gold gilt cover lettering. Slight foxing observed on pages top edge. Original paper dust jacket is in good overall condition. Book measures 10"W x 11.5"L x 1.25"D
