The story of the Comstock Lode is about the boom days, 1857-1865, of Virginia City, Nevada, where once some 40,000 men gathered from far and near to seize a fortune of silver from the Comstock Lode, which was turning out from twenty to thirty million dollars a year, and comes to being in these pages. Told with vigorous and swift moving enthusiasm, which creates a vast, colorful and dramatic panorama of this phase in the development of the West. one of the most colorful and dramatic episodes in American history. Includes many anecdotes from reminiscences of oldtimers. The first section covers the discovery of gold & silver and the subsequent mining rush; the second section covers the bonanza days; the third section tells of dull times on the Comstock. Much on the early rushers; Piute Indians; Mark Twain; the Chinese influence; stagecoaching; outlaws & bandits; Adah Menken; Sam Brown and many more. George D. Lyman was a physician who made history a hobby. His style and method verge on novel-writing. Book is in overall good condition, blue clothbound hardcover gold gilt lettering exhibits slight fading. Scuffing noted to cover edges, minor staining on cover. Top of spine is loose from pages, Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing. No other obvious marring noted.
