Featured in this lot is this 1915 illustrated hardcover of “The Yellowstone National Park Historical and Descriptive” by Hiram Martin Chittenden. This is an eighth impression from 1915. The book features a comprehensive description of to America's first national park, Yellowstone with its wildlife and vegetation. Hiram Martin Chittenden (1858–1917) was an American engineer and historian, Chittenden's 1902 history of the fur trade has been highly influential among historians of the West. He authored "The Yellowstone National Park Historical and Descriptive" during his first years working at Yellowstone and was in exclusive charge of the road work and general improvements, the basalt arch at the northern entrance and the single-span Chittenden Memorial Bridge (formerly the Melan arch bridge) across the Yellowstone River. The book contains numerous maps and illustrations, including a fold out map between pages 334 and 335. The blue cloth bound cover has gilt gold lettering on the cover and along the spine. Intact pages indicate slight age tanning and foxing, no other obvious damage noted. Measures 5.25"W x 8"L x 1.25"D
