The lot features an early circa 1940’s leather arm-chair that has been attributed as being the personal chair of Thomas Molesworth. The chair shows the Molesworth red color and is adorned with three handmade copper and sterling silver buttons with the “TM” Thomas Molesworth brand (T / M). The piece was purchased from a prominent antiques shop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming were it was attributed as being the personal chair of Thomas Molesworth. The chair is believed to have been altered by the hand of Molesworth with these custom crafted buttons or concho’s and dating to circa 1940’s. Thomas C. Molesworth (American 1890-1977) was an innovative designer who was significant in the creation of a distinctly Western style of furniture using hides, horns and natural wood creating the “cowboy furniture” style. He originally managed the Rowe Furniture Company in Billings, Montana in the early 1900’s before moving his family to Cody, Wyoming in 1931. Molesworth furnished some of the most significant ranches, homes and hotels around the country including President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s home. Molesworth furniture is the most sought after in western collecting with such examples from the O.T.O. Ranch in Montana selling for $225,000 at auction for the game table sold by Sotheby’s on May 23rd 2018 and the club chair that sold for $137,500 at the same sale. Provenance: From the Ladder Ranch & Diamond Bar 7 Brand located just East of Big Timber, Montana near the Montana Crazy Mountains. A Thomas Molesworth hand crafted chair with a similar style called the "Tub Chair" sold at the Sotheby's May 2018 sale for $10,625, the chair shows a similar style of manufacture and design as the chair represented in this lot.
