The lot features a unique Tifft and Whiting (sometimes Tift & Whiting) quality coin silver engraved knife with hallmark dating to circa 1840-1853. The knife shows the coin silver Tifft & Whiting stamp on the blade (the walking chicken, T&W stacked, arm and hammer). Tifft & Whiting was from North Attleboro, Massachusetts and dated from circa 1840-1853 and were makers of quality coin silver items and knives. They were later succeeded by Whiting & Gooding, then Whiting, Fessenden & Cowan which became Whiting Mfg. Co. in 1866. The knife blade, pick or awl and body are all made from coin silver and are finely etched, engraved. The backside of the blade is engraved, “Charlotte James Harris, Birth day Token From Husband, July 19th. 1860”. The knife body in coin silver has a heavy beautiful engraved finish and is also engraved on one side with the giver and receivers’ initials. The backside of the spin shows a wonderful vine work. Truly a wonderful coin silver pocket knife dating to the mid-1800’s. Measures overall when open 5 7/8”L when open with a 2.5”L blade. When closed the knife is 3 3/8”L.
