Offered in this lot are Tombstone and surrounding aread Arizona Territory and New Mexico Territory Mining Ephemera, circa 1870-1940. Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. Mines include Tombstone Consolidated Mining Co., Tombstone Mill and Mining Co., Western Mining Co., Contention Mill and Mining Co., Head Center Consolidated Mining Company, El Capitan Gold Mine, Vizina Consolidated Mining Co., Gold Road Mine, Bob Mason Mine, and the Congress Mine. Also included is ephemera from assayer's offices and mining agents, photos and photo postcards, a mining claim plat map, and panoramic aerial views of Douglas and Bisbee mining districts. Photo postcard is of the Leadville Hoist in Paradise, Arizona, 1910. Photos are respectively labeled, "First Bullion shipped from Tombstone Consolidated Mining Co.", museum code, "P-145"; "Jack Cramer Tombstone Cons'd Mine Co. looks like workings for the hoist", museum code, "P-144; Gold Road Mining Camp, Gallup Studio, Chloride, Arizona 1940; Congress Mining Camp 1905. Also included is a letter of introduction from mining agents, Parsons & Redfern, is mounted in a double-matted stained wood frame. Both Arizona and New Mexico have a rich mining history that began over a thousand years ago with Native Americans using minerals for jewelry and tools, followed by Spanish exploration in the 16th century and a significant American gold rush in the mid-19th century. The discovery of large copper, silver, and gold deposits transformed the Arizona Territory into a state, with copper becoming a major economic driver from the 1880s onward. Indigenous peoples mining turquoise and copper before the arrival of Europeans, who then established mining communities for silver and other minerals in the 1600s and 1700s. The U.S. acquisition led to American gold rushes in the Ortiz Mountains and the growth of coal mining in the 1850s, while the late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the development of major copper silver operations.
