For your consideration are Tombstone, Arizona Territory School Pull-Down Wall Maps. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. One map is dated 1898 and the other is 1914. Founded in 1879 after the discovery of silver, Tombstone grew rapidly from around 100 residents to nearly 14,000 in the span of less than seven years. As it grew into a significant Western town, it became famous for its lawlessness and the legendary Gunfight at the O. K. Corral. A tent served as the first school. In 1880 the first public school began in a small adobe room with a dirt floor and mud roof, and planks for desks. It started with nine students and grew to forty by the term's end. In the 1881-1882 school year, the school session began with 135 pupils, and due to growth, additional rooms and teachers were added. While high school-level classes were offered earlier, a separate high school was not constructed until 1922. The first map is dated 1898, the year of the Spanish-American War's onset. Titled, "Department of the Interior. U. S. GENERAL LAND OFFICE HON. BINGER HERMANN, COMMISSIONER. UNITED STATES and TERRITORIES, Showing The Extent Of PUBLIC SURVEYS, Indian, Military And Forest Reservations, Rail Roads, Canals And Other Details, Compiled From Official Surveys Of THE GENERAL LAND OFFICE And Other Authentic Sources. Under The Direction Of HARRY KING, C. E. Chief, Draughting Division. 1898" The second map is dated 1914, the year of the onset of World War I. Titled, "Department Of The Interior General Land Office CLAY TALLMAN, COMMISSIONER UNITED STATES including TERRRITORIES And Insular Possessions Showing The Extent Of PUBLIC SURVEYS Indian, Military And Forest Reservations, Railroads, Canals National Parks And Other Details Compiled Under Direction Of I. P. BERTHRONG, CHIEF OF DRAFTING DIVISION 1914". Each map has a legend and scale of miles, the legend describes the colours used to differentiate areas of significance. Each map is mounted on a linen cloth backing, width-length dowel rods with turned end caps. Some cracking and discolouration noted on fabric, separation noted between fabric and dowels. Measurements 90.5"W x 63"L, 89.5"W x 63"L.
