Presented in this lot is a Rare Program and Dance Card for the Second Grand Ball of the Tombstone Turn Verein 1881, framed. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. This German term translates to "gymnastic union" or "gymnastics club". The Turn Verein was the German Society of Tombstone, and were mainly a gymnastics/ athletic club. Founded in Germany as a major gymnastic movement that also became political, social, and cultural organizations for German immigrants, Turners (as members were called) were also active in public education and labor movements. Tombstone’s Turnverein Hall was an important location for meetings and social events. While it is not possible to know how many people could fit in the hall, it is reasonable to assume that it would accommodate a crowd of about 150. The gold gilt printed program is mounted in a matted gold gilt gesso wood frame. On the reverse is the Dance Card which lists all the dances for the Ball. Many leading citizens of Tombstone served on the organizing committee including George Spangenberg (gunsmith), Joseph Lippert (barber), John P. Clum (Mayor and publisher of the Tombstone Epitath Newspaper). Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum code written on reverse top right edge, "TTO127." Program and dance card are in nicely preserved condition, age tanning noted. Frame is in good overall condition, gesso chipped at the top left corner, slight scuffing on edges observed. Program measures 4.25"W x 6.25"L, dance card on reverse measures 4.25"W x 5.5"L. Frame measures 8.25"W x 10.125"L x 1.25"D, combined weight is 14oz.
