For your consideration is this Undertaker's 1878 New Testament in Spanish from Tombstone, Arizona Territory. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. George R. Watt and Charles B. Tarbell, operated Watt & Tarbell Undertakers of Tombstone, Arizona. Their hearse, The Black Moriah trimmed in gold and silver, carried virtually all of the people who died in and around Tombstone to the Boothill cemetery between 1881 and 1906. After the famous October 26, 1881, street fight near the O.K. Corral, the late Tom and Frank McLaury made their last ride to Boothill in the back of the Black Moriah. This Spanish language New Testament is the Cipriano de Valera version from the American Bible Society, New York: "EL NUEVO TESTAMENTO De Nuestro Señor y Salvador JESU CRISTO: Version De Cipriano De Valera: Revisada Y Corregida. Impresa Por La Sociedad Americana De La Biblia. Nueva York: 1878." De Valera was a Spanish Protestant Reformer and refugee who edited the first major revision of Casiodoro de Reina's Spanish Bible, which has become known as the Reina-Valera version. With the Mexican border not very far, Tombstone's Hispanic population, which constituted 8 percent of the total, made up the biggest minority group in this Anglo American–dominated town. Tombstone Western Heritage Museum label reads, "1878 Spanish New Testament Found in Undertaker's Building in Tombstone", museum code, "BK16." The stamped black leather gold gilt hardcover book is in amazing preserved condition, scuffing noted to covers and spine, gold gilt title on spine. Intact pages exhibit age tanning, foxing, moisture staining. Measures 4.5"W x 6.5"L x .75"D, weight is 8oz.
