Featured in this lot is an Antique Tombstone Virgil & Allie Earp's Victorian Gate Leg Table, circa 1879 to 1882. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. Originally purchased in Tombstone. Founded in 1879 after the discovery of silver, Tombstone grew rapidly from around 100 residents to nearly 14,000 in the span of less than seven years. As it grew into a significant Western town, it became famous for its lawlessness and the legendary Gunfight at the O. K. Corral. Virgil Earp was the older brother of Wyatt Earp, the legendary America Old West gunslinger, gambler, and lawman in Dodge City, Kansas, Deadwood in Dakota Territory and Tombstone in Arizona Territory. As Deputy U. S. Marshal, Virgil was involved in the gunfight at the O. K. Corral, during which lawmen, which included his brothers Morgan and Wyatt as well as Doc Holliday, killed three outlaw Cochise County Cowboys on October 26, 1881. Virgil was wounded during the gunbattle. Later in December, Virgil was ambushed and maimed as he walked from the Oriental Saloon to his room. Afterwards, he and Allie moved to his parents' home in Colton, California to recover from his wounds. They stayed in California until 1895 when they returned to Arizona Territory. Throughout their travels, they kept this table. Tombstone Western Heritage Museum label reads, "VIRGIL & ALLIE EARP'S TABLE Purchased in Tombstone it stayed its whole life with them. It was one of only a few items that Allie still had when she died. Her last wish was for this table to find its way back to Tombstone. Why was this table so special? Was it at this table that all the Earp brothers sat together for the last time?" The gate leg table has two leafs supported by separate gate legs, a small drawer. It is in fair condition showing wear consistent with age and use, including a distressed finish. Measures open 33.5"W x 48.25"L x 30"H, closed 33.5"W x 12.75"L.
