Founded in 1953 by Joe Small, True West Magazine is the world’s oldest continuously published magazine dedicated to the American Old West. True West was the largest Western magazine on the market in the 1960s, selling hundreds of thousands of copies monthly at newsstands. The magazine benefited from an era featuring popular television western series such as Bonanza, The Lone Ranger, and Gunsmoke. At least one episode, "The Hunted" (1958), of the ABC/Warner Brothers series Sugarfoot is based on a True West article. Fans interested in the lives of real cowboys and cowgirls found those stories in True West. The magazines explore authentic stories of outlaws, lawmen, and Western culture and cover authentic accounts of icons like Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, and Wild Bill Hickok, and breaks down legendary Western gunfights. The magazines feature the "Ultimate Historic Travel Guide" and guides readers to Western towns where they can "walk where history happened", reviews Western movies, television, art and books with an annual award feature recognizing the year's best Western books, movies, museums, ghost towns, heritage sites and clothing. The magazines are mounted in brown leatherette bound gold gilt hardcover binders, with title on both the front covers as well as the spines. Magazines exhibit age tanning throughout.
