For your consideration are four, U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Smokey the Bear cardstock posters circa 1964, 1966, 1966 and 1972. All four of the posters in this lot were presented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and were printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office. For more than 70 years, the Smokey the Bear mascot has been used to promote fire safety. The United States Forest Service invented Smokey in the spring of 1950 to educate the public about wildfires. The first poster (1964) shows an image of a smaller deer getting a smell of smoke through the woods. The poster reads, "Before you start any fire: Follow local regulations, be sure fire cant spread, don't burn on dry, windy days and never leave fire unattended / Please! Only you can prevent forest fires" in the bottom left hand corner. The bottom right corner shows a portrait of Smokey the Bear wearing his iconic, "Smokey" ranger hat. The second poster (1966) shows Smokey's ABC's of fire safety. The poster reads, "Always hold matches till cold, Be sure to drown all fires, Crush all smokes dead out / Please follow Smokey's ABC's". The bottom shows Smokey surrounded by flowers and tree branches holding a shovel and wearing his ranger hat. The third poster (1966), shows a group of children holding animals while the top of the poster reads, "Smokey's friends don't play with matches" in bold, red lettering. The bottom reads, "Please, Only you can prevent forest fires!" with Smokey's face next to it. The fourth and final poster (1972) shows Smokey sitting on a stump around various animals such as rabbits, deer, bear cubs, a raccoon and more. He is smiling and is wearing his iconic blue jeans and his ranger hat reading, "Smokey" as he holds some rabbits. The top of the poster reads, "Remember: there are babes in the woods." in black lettering. The posters show fair to good condition with wear present to each of them showing creases and wear to the graphics. No major signs of damage are noted. The posters measure 18 1/2" L x 13" W and have a collective weight of 8 ounces.
