Included in this lot is a US Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor .45-70 caliber rifle. The Model 1873 "Trapdoor" Springfield was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army. The model 1873 was the fifth variation of the Allin trapdoor design and was named for its hinged breechblock, which opened like a trapdoor. This infantry rifle model features a 325/8-inch barrel chambered in .45-70. The top of the barrel is also struck with a variety of proof marks near the receiver. The top of the trapdoor breach is stamped “US Model 1873”. The rifle has two “U” stamped barrel bands, two sling swivels, and ramrod. It also features a straight grain, one piece, varnished walnut stock with curved metal butt plate. The right side of the receiver is stamped “US Springfield” and features a spread winged eagle. The rifle shows good condition for its age. It has a nice gray patina to the barrel and receiver. Serial Number: 171474. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
