This is an original signed, Victor Coochwytewa (1922-1911) Hopi large vintage sterling silver overlaid pueblo pictorial story teller bracelet. This piece is done by Victor Coochwytewa, the father of Hopi silver overlay with this being a fine example showing a pictorial scene with a mesa pueblo in front of mountains with four Hopi farmer figures in almost a bug form on either side (similar figures seen on other Coochwytewa pieces). The heavy large bracelet is signed / stamped with a raincloud with three rolling cloud and five rain lines, documented from Victor Coochwytewa. This storyteller piece likely predates the opening of his Kopavi Shop in 1976. Victor Coochwytewa (1922-1911) is widely respected as one of the true masters of Hopi silver and gold overlay jewelry. Born at Shungopavi at Second Mesa, Victor was first active in jewelry making in 1940 with Paul Saufkie. He served his country with great honor in the South Pacific during World War II receiving many honors including the Purple Heart. Once his service was complete Victor returned to Hopi Mesas in 1946 and joined the first silversmith training programs for veterans in Hopi that was formed by the G.I. Bill under Paul Saufkie and Fred Kabotie. He eventually developed an overlay jewelry technique of texturizing the oxidized base piece of metal to make it further stand out. Victor Coochwytewa went on to win prices at Museum of Northern Arizona, Gallup, Intertribal Ceremonial, Heard Museum, Santa Fe Indian Market and many others, becoming one of the most successful of the second generations of Hopi overlay artist. He was recognized by the state of Arizona as an “Arizona Indian Living Treasure” in 1994. Coochwytew always kept his focus on living a traditional Hopi life, making certain to tend to his cornfields every day regularly stating the corn was his work and jewelry was his hobby. He retired from jewelry making in 2006. The early vintage piece is done in silver overlay by the master and father of silver overlay with thick heavy sterling silver work and correctly signed. Measures overall 6.75”L inside circumference wrist size which includes the 1 3/8”W opening. Box measurements of 2.5”W by 2”H by 2 1/8”D.
