Featured in this lot is this Victrola Orthophonic suitcase player circa 1920's. The orthophonic player features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that comes complete with four double sided records and a plethora of replacement needles. The player is cranked to run and has a fast-slow knob seen in front. The Victrola Orthophonic player, housed in a portable suitcase-style cabinet around 1921, represents a pivotal moment in early recorded sound. Designed to be both elegant and practical, it featured a spring-driven motor and an internal horn engineered to deliver clearer, louder, and more balanced sound than earlier phonographs. The compact suitcase form made high-quality music portable for the first time, while the Orthophonic design reflected Victor’s emphasis on acoustic precision just before the transition to electrical recording, marking the end of an era in purely mechanical sound reproduction. The condition of this Victrola orthophonic player is preserved with some wear to the implements inside consistent with age and the leather wrapped outside walling shows age wear in sections. The measurements of this orthophonic player is 15 1/4" x 16 1/2" x 7". The collective weight of this orthophonic player is 26.6g.
