Featured in this lot is a Vintage Automobile Touring Picnic Set and Leather Carrying Case, Thermos brand, early 20th century. The automobile became a part of American life in the early decades of the 20th century. Automobile touring in the early 20th century was a popular pastime that involved driving open-top cars for recreation and family vacations. The 1920s are considered the golden age of motor camping, with 1927 being the peak year. This leather carrying case includes four (4) enamel and metal 9.25" dinner plates, three (3) enamel and metal 8.5" salad plates, six (6) enamel and metal 7" dessert plates. Four enamel and metal coffee cups, some plates and cups are marked "KER Sweden". Thermos brand marked dinner flatware: knives (3), forks (4). Four tablespoons marked "stainless steel, pairing knife marked "Valley Forge Stainless Steel", curved serrated grapefruit knife marked "GH Cutlery Canada stainless steel". Two leather strap secured small stoneware jars w/ lids, metal top glass salt and pepper shakers, two glasses with wicker holders, one shot glass with wicker holder, three extra glass wicker holders. Two metal food storage boxes with carrying handles. Leather wrapped storage case has "Thermos Made in England" tag inside top lid, leather straps for securing dessert dishes, leather straps for securing missing thermos bottles. Picnic set and case are in preserved condition, enamel chipping observed, interior red liner exhibits fading and scuffing, alligatoring and scuffing noted on leather case. Case has front hasp lock, no key included. Case measures 11.75"W 28"L x 7"D, combined weight is 24lb, 6oz.
