Featured in this lot is a Vintage Hand-carved Hand-painted Big Sky Carvers Signed Canvasback Duck Decoy. This decoy was carved by Master Carver, M. Michael of Big Sky Carvers prior to the company's move from Bozeman to Manhattan, Montana. It shows simple, yet elegant lines; in addition to the Big Sky Carvers logo on the bottom, is the Master Carver's signature, M. Michael. The canvasback (Aythya valisineria) is a species of diving duck, the largest found in North America. Males have a chestnut red head, red eyes, white body, a black chest and tail; both sexes feature a long sloping bill. It takes years to perfect the craft of decoy carving, so each of the artists is understandably concerned that, before finishing a piece, each decoy is a carving the artist will be proud to call their own. Preserved forever in timbers sawed from massive west-coast Sugar Pine, these exceptional art works retain the warm glow given them by the hands of their creators. From the intricate wing overlays to the folk art finishes, the process has been refined over many decades. The carved decoy features a wonderfully and professionally handcrafted and painted wood construction. Colours of red chestnut, black, white and red. Master carver's signature as well as the Big Sky Carvers stamped logo are located on the bottom. The decoy is in nicely preserved condition, no marring noted. Measures 13.5"L x 6.25"W x 6.75"H, weight is 1lb, 14oz.
