The Improved Order of Red Men is a fraternal organization descended from the Sons of Liberty, circa 1765, that worked "underground" to establish help establish freedom and liberty in the early Colonies. They patterned themselves after the great Iroquois Confederacy and its democratic governing body. Founded in 1790 to produce nails and purchased in 1812, The Phoenix Iron Works (1813-1855) was a manufacturer of iron and related products during the 19th century and early 20th century. Phoenix Iron Company was a major producer of Griffen Gun cannons for the Union Army during the Civil War and also produced the Phoenix column, an advance in construction material.
