Offered in this lot is a Vintage "Montana Peak" Campaign Hat Collection (3), circa 1960s. The Montana Peak hat, or "lemon squeezer," is a distinctive campaign hat with a four-dent pinched crown designed to shed rain and provide sun protection, originating in the late 19th century. The style evolved from early Stetson designs like the 1863 "Boss of the Plains". Popularized by cowboys and Army scouts, it was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1911 and became iconic as the National Park Service ranger hat, symbolizing protection and conservation. Buffalo Soldiers in Yosemite, are credited with shaping their hats with this pinch to improve functionality, later influencing the National Park Service. The Montana Peak remained standard headgear for various state troopers and park rangers throughout the 20th century, serving as a lasting piece of Americana. Two of the hats are olive drab colour and the other is charcoal black. All three have stiff hard brims, sizes 7 1/8 and 7 3/8 respectively. The hats are in good preserved conditions. The black hat is labeled on the sweat band, "Ron Richards, Oakland, Calif." Each measures 12.625"W x 14"L x 5.5"H, collective weight is 1lb, 6oz.
