Included in this lot are Vintage Navajo Silver Lizard Button Covers and Buffalo Nickel Turquoise Prayer Feather Dangle Earrings, circa 1960s. Lizards are extremely common figures in Native American art and jewelry, especially from tribes in the southwest. The deserts of the American southwest are harsh and unforgiving. Death comes easily, and it’s difficult to thrive. Yet lizards are some of the most prolific of the desert residents, able to easily hide during the day, and find ways to survive during the night. Tribes such as the Navajo directly tie the lizard to ideas of healing, health, and even resurrection. To Native Americans, the Bison or American Buffalo was a symbol of sacred life and abundance. This is especially true if the right action is joined by the right prayer. Prayer feathers, either single or bundled are used by an individual to offer a prayer to the Great Spirit. The feathers carry your words, thoughts and feelings to the Great Spirit. These vintage pieces have rich patina throughout, are in very nice condition. Button covers measure .75" diameter. Earrings are 2.5"L, combined weight is 36 grams.
