Featured in this lot are Signed First Edition Ben K. Green Western Americana Books (3), publisher Alfred A. Knopf. Ben K. Green (1912-1974) was an author who wrote about horses and the post-World War I American West. His books consist of anecdotes drawn from his own experiences in the Southwestern United States. He was born in Cumby, Texas and raised in Weatherford, Texas. Included in this collection are "Horse Tradin'", 1972, a classic collection of humorous and insightful stories about the art of horse trading in the Old West, written by a veterinarian who became a trader. the book details the tricks, scams, and skills involved in the business, from making old horses look young with paint to the realities of shady deals, all told with a unique voice and illustrated by Lorence Bjorklund. It's considered a must-read for fans of Western lore, memoirs, and horses. The second book with illustrated slipcase is "Some More Horse Tradin'", 1974, a Hand-Signed Special Limited First Edition. This is a collection of 15 humorous and authentic tales (or "yarns") about the wily world of horse trading in the old American West. The stories follow "Doc" Green, a Texas veterinarian-turned-horse trader, as he matches wits with colorful old-timers and rangy characters. The tales often highlight the "knavery, skill, and salesmanship" required to trade everything from well-bred mares to "used-to-be-bad" horses across the plains of Texas and even into Vermont. The last book with slipcase is a Hand-Signed Special Limited First Edition of "Wild Cow Tales", 1969. This is a collection of thirteen stories about the author's experiences as a cowboy specializing in catching wild, "outlaw" cattle in the 1930s, detailing the dangerous and difficult work with humor and firsthand accounts of rope burns and broken bones. Published in 1969, the book is known for its authentic portrayal of range life and the unique challenges of handling untamed steers, with illustrations by Lorence Bjorklund. Stories about rounding up wild cattle that were too difficult for normal cowboys, highlighting the unusual tricks and circumstances required. The book captures the rugged life of a cowhand, the dangers of the job, and the author's skill in handling "wily" animals. All of the books are in like new condition. Respective measurements (with applicable slipcase) are 5.875"W x 8.5"L x 1.25"D, 6.125"W x 9"L x 1.25"D, 6.125"W x 9"L x 1.25"D. Combined weight 4lb, 6oz.
