The 44-40 Winchester (also known as .44 WCF) is famously called "The Round that Won the West". Introduced in 1873 for the Winchester Model 1873, it was the first centerfire cartridge that could be used in both rifles and handguns (like the Colt Single Action Army), allowing frontiersmen to carry one type of ammunition for two weapons. Winchester Repeating Arms is an iconic American brand primarily known for its lever-action rifles, famously dubbed "The Gun That Won the West". The original company founded by Oliver Winchester in 1866 no longer exists as an independent entity as it was purchased by Western Cartridge Company (later Olin Corporation) in 1931.
