The lot features an original circa 1893-1935 William H. Horstmann & Sons Axe. Originally founded as a lace and fringe factory in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Horstmann & Sons later began opening military goods stores between 1828 and 1830. They produced many U.S. military pieces such as U.S. Naval Swords, Cavalry Sabers, USMC Swords, Civil War Officers swords, knives and axes. This is marked, “Horstmann Phila” which dates it as being in the later years of the company dating to circa 1893-1935. The axe shows a solid brass construction with mellow coloring curved outer edge triangular shape with straight blade, oval eyelet hole with wide construction ending in the unique tall tapering ball end hammer poll. The piece is attached to the presumable original haft handle which is in a very commercial black painted solid wood with tool like shape. Measures 14.5”L by 6 7/8”L.
