Walt Wooten has been painting throughout his life. Ten years ago he began to focus on bringing the vivid images of Native American Peoples to canvas. He grew up in Chicago, the son of a minister, and the grandson of a full-blooded Choctaw Indian. His own Native American heritage, the topic of many dinner conversations and boyhood dreams, nourished his fascination with Native American Culture. Walt's childhood was spent drawing horses and copying photographs of saddles from the Sears catalog. He won several scholarships in school for his artistic talent. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and Roosevelt Universary. He also studied with Don Baum at the Hyde Park Center. The Southwestern influence has been a major theme throughout his career. All of his work shares startling color and uncluttered composition. Through influences of John Singer Sargent, Milton Avery, and Fritz Scholder, his contemporary style has evolved. Walt has exhibited across the United States and is represented presently by: Hampton Gallery; Santa Fe, NM; Squash Blossom Galleries, Aspen and Vail, CO; Styria Gallery, Locust Valley, NY; Denver Buffalo Company, Denver, CO; American West Gallery, Chicago, IL; and Carmen Rodesly, Houston, TX.
