Featured in this lot are two Will James books titled, "Lone Cowboy" (1930) and "Cow Country" (1927). William Roderick James (1892-1942) was a Canadian-American artist and writer of the American West. He is known for writing "Smoky the Cowhorse", for which he won the 1927 Newbery Medal, and numerous "cowboy" stories for adults and children. His artwork, which predominantly involved cowboy and rodeo scenes, followed "in the tradition of Charles Russell", and much of it was used to illustrate his books. In 1992, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. "Lone Cowboy" details the life and adventures of Will James' life as a cowboy. The piece contains 35 black and white illustrations throughout the book. The green cloth gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover displays the image of a cowboy astride a horse, lasso in hand. "Cow Country" is a collection of eight stories, from wild mustangs and ornery steers to lonesome drifters and fancy dudes, which bring to life the weather-hardened cowboys who worked and lived on the range. Each story features Will James' pen-and-ink and charcoal drawings. The tan cloth bound gold gilt illustrated stamped hardcover displays the image of a steer skull on the front cover, a lariat and rifle image on the spine. Original illustrated paper dust jacket exhibits tears and scuffing. Both books are in good overall condition, intact pages exhibit age tanning. First book measures 5.75"W x 8.375"L x 1.5"D.
