Winchester 1892 round barrel rifle in .25-20 caliber, #360746. Made in 1906, this is a fine example of the hard-working Winchester rifles that were so popular with sheep herders, farmers and ranches at the turn of the last century. This example has a fine walnut stock and forend that shows light handling only. The stock and forend wood to metal fit is tight which indicates it has never been sanded or refinished. The receiver shows fine original blue on the rear portion of the sides and on the bolt on the top of the receiver along with fine blue on the loading gate. The hammer and lever show a hint of original case color finish. The 24” barrel and magazine show good lightly aged blue with some minor thinning/mixing age brown. Original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and small Winchester blade front sight. All markings on the barrel and upper tang are sharp and correct. The action is tight with a strong safety half-cock on the hammer. The bore shows use and is dark with visible rifling all the way through. This rifle recently came out of here in Montana. During this time every sheep herder’s wagon contained a .25-20 Winchester rifle for defense against coyotes, foxes and wolves. Most of these fine Winchester rifles saw hard and extended use. Finding a Montana used rifle with any finish is not common. This example has a most attractive appearance. The rifle weighs 7lbs 4oz. Serial Number: 360746. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
