This lot features a great example of a Winchester Model 1892 lever action rifle chambered in the venerable .32-40 W.C.F. (Winchester Center Fire) caliber. The rifle features a 22 inch round sporter deluxe blue finish barrel, wonderful walnut stocks, deep bluing, and fixed sights. The Winchester Model 1892 was a lever-action repeating rifle designed by John Browning as a smaller, lighter version of his large-frame Model 1886, and which replaced the Model 1873 as the company's lever-action for pistol-caliber rounds such as the .44-40. When asked by Winchester to design an improved lever action to compete with a recent Marlin offering, John Browning said he would have the prototype completed in under a month or it would be free. Within 2 weeks, Browning had a functioning prototype of the 92. Caliber's for the rifle vary and some are custom-chambered. The original rounds were the .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40 Winchester centerfire rounds, followed in 1895 by the new .25-20. A few Model 92s chambered for .218 Bee were produced in 1936-38. Rifles in .44-40 proved to be most popular, far outstripping sales of the other chamberings. This rifle is in good condition, with some handling and wear from use. The bluing across the barrel is in 85%+ condition with the receiving frame showing much of the original blue with wear. The left side of the barrel is marked, "WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL - MODEL 92 - WINCHESTER TRADE MARK - 32 W.C.F." and on the right side, "MADE IN THE U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN CONN." The barrel and frame show the correct Winchester proof marks. The rifle tang shows a unque marking of, "REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF. / WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK" with, "MOD. / 1892" being marked directly under the exposed target hammer in smaller lettering. This is a Curio & Relic firearm. FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 499037 and was manufactured in 1909. Has a custom Winchester barrel marked, "BV LYNDEN WA".
