Very unusual and very early antique Winchester Model 1894 deluxe, special order rifle in rare, limited production .25-35 caliber. This scarce variation with PISTOL GRIP stock, full octagon barrel, full magazine and crescent butt plate was a special custom order. The serial number on this attractive rifle is 57735 which according to the Winchester Handbook by George Madis was manufactured in 1896. Interestingly, when a pistol grip was ordered on a rifle, it was usually also fitted with a shotgun butt plate. A pistol grip stock with a curved, crescent butt is doubly rare and desirable. The walnut stock and forend reveal a lovely deep brown color with tight wood to metal fit and only minor handling. The pistol grip has the correct Winchester embossed hard rubber grip cap. The receiver shows fine original blue that is thinning mainly on the top and edges. The receiver also reveals fine screw heads.
Additionally, the action is still very tight with strong springs and strong safety half-cock on the hammer. The 26” octagon barrel retains fine lightly aged blue and is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact along with a small blade front sight. All markings are correctly stamped including the very early “MODEL 1894, WINCHESTER, PAT. AUGUST 21, 1894” on the upper tang and the typical standard Winchester address, Special Smokeless steel and caliber stamping on the barrel. The action is tight and the excellent bore shows fine deep rifling throughout without any discernible pitting or roughness. According to above mentioned source, by 1941 Winchester had
produced 857,613 1894s in .30 W.C.F. (.30-30) caliber; 101,423 in .32 Win. Special caliber and only 16,581 in .25-35 caliber. Further, only 2,983 rifles in all calibers were made with pistol grip stocks. Considering caliber plus special order pistol grip stock with crescent butt plate and octagon barrel, this is an extremely rare Model 1894. The Model 1894 was a popular rifle with lawmen, sportsmen and especially with the Klondike Gold Seekers in Alaska beginning in 1898. Many consider this Jonathan Browning designed rifle to be the finest and most modern tubular magazine lever action rifle Winchester ever produced. A rare opportunity to acquire a classic, early production antique serial number and historically significant Winchester with very fine uncleaned appearance and supremely rare features. Serial Number: 57735. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
