This is an exceptionally rare and large “Running Crane” framed piece by Winold Reiss (1886-1953) dating to circa 1930’s. The artwork features a beautiful classic image of Running Crane of the Blackfeet of Glacier National Park with the artist signature in the artwork shown bottom right just behind the framing. Running Crane (Shekomaxkan) was a historically significant 19th-century chief of the Blackfeet (Pikuni) Nation. He is in traditional, colorful clothing and is holding eagle feathers in his hand and wears two in his hair. Winold Reiss was born on September 16, 1886, in Karlsruhe, Germany. A gifted portraitist, Reiss challenged the convention of racial stereotyping by portraying Native American subjects as dignified individuals. This is an early run and very large piece with rich bright colors, likely Talio crome by Brown & Bigelow, similar to the piece sold by NAAC in September 2023 for $2,000 of “The Drummers” which was marked as such and the piece sold in the same sale, “Yellow Kidney” which sold for $1,187.50. These larger pieces are rare and desirable with this being from one of the largest Winold Reiss collections we have seen. The piece shows good condition overall with little to no wear present and no signs of damage noted. The visible art measures 27 1/2" L x 19 3/4" W, while the entire piece measures 31 3/4" L x 23 7/8" W x 1 3/8" D. It has a total weight of 10 pounds and 10 ounces.
