The lot features a beautiful Woodlands Great Lakes porcupine quilled otter skin bag. The creation of whole-skin bags was common in much of the Woodlands and Great Plains. According to the MET Museum otter's were a revered animal and full otter skin bags were found mainly amongst the Woodlands and Greater Plains. These bags were used to store sacred tobacco and other materials of healing and prayer. The bag shows a tanned otter skin with fur in the animals orignal form with a cut down the chest as the bag opening. The bag has porcupine quill quillwork on Indian tanned hide at the front feet and along the bottom and otter tail. The quillwork shows dark red, natural cream and orange coloring. Noted as being in the style or pattern of the Sauk and Fox with bird effigy, zig-zag and wheel medallion. These bags could be considered pipe bags, tobacco bags, otter skin bags and this one at one point was used as an arrow quiver. The bottom section shows quillwork down the triangle tail area with otter skin fur as a separate piece along the backside. Provenance: Formerly listed by Jackson's. Measures 53.5"L which includes the top hide tie by 8"W.
