For your consideration are Yaqui / Mayo Indian Pascola Dance Masks, circa mid to late century. These are handcrafted wooden masks from Sonora, Mexico, and attributed to Silvario Aguilera Sol, Manuel Rodriguez and Ramon Ochoa respectively. The first mask is painted brown with white around the cutout eyes and cheeks, red geometric designs are along the sides of the head. Green beads are under each eye, eyebrows and facial hair of horsehair. A painted white cross is on the forehead. The second mask is painted black with the mouth being white, red and tan for the teeth. A red Maltese cross against a tan background surrounded by a red and white sun image is on the forehead. A protruding element with black horsehair painted in white is below the left eye. Horsehair eyebrows and beard. The last mask is painted reddish brown, lips painted orange with white teeth. Eyes and eyebrows are highlighted in white. Sides of the head have painted white dots on a greyish background. Black horsehair eyebrows and beard. The masks are worn by "old man of the fiesta" dancers to represent the yo aniya (enchanted, wild world). Key features include carved-in crosses on the forehead, human-like features, goat or horse hair, and pierced eyes for visibility. These masks are essential for ritual, often featuring painted designs and, sometimes, an open-mouthed, burlesque expression. Pascola masks are used in Yaqui/Mayo religious ceremonies, symbolizing a bridge between the human world and the spiritual, natural world. The Yaqui (Yoeme/Hiaki) and Mayo (Yoreme) are closely related Indigenous Cahita-speaking peoples originally from the river valleys of Sonora and Sinaloa in Mexico. Known for their strong cultural traditions, including the sacred Deer Dance, they are renowned for their historical resistance to colonization and territorial struggles. The Pascola masks are in very nicely preserved conditions, no marring noted. Respective measurements are 4.25"W x 8.5"L x 3.5"D, 7"W x 14"L including the hair; 5.5"W x 7.25"L x 3"D, including the hair 13"L; and, 5"W x 6.75"L x 2.5"D, including the hair 18"L. Combined weight is 1lb, 2oz.
