Featured in this lot is this Yellowstone National Park Haynes Collection, circa 1920s to 1968. The first designated national park in the United States, Yellowstone Park has captured the imagination of millions upon millions of people from all over the world. From stunning geologic formations to the thousands of wild animals that call Yellowstone home, Yellowstone was brought to the world's attention through the photographs of early explorers like Frank Jay Haynes. Haynes, known as F. Jay or the Professor to almost all who knew him, was a professional photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs the settlement and early history of the great Northwest. He became both the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railway and of Yellowstone National Park as well as operating early transportation concessions in the park. His photographs were widely published in articles, journals, and books, and turned into stereographs and postcards in the late 19th and early 20th century. Included in this collection are a hand coloured photo of the East Entrance, "51334 Golden Gate of Yellowstone National Park", a hand coloured photo of Devil's Tower, "51290 Mato Teepee or Devil's Tower, Wyoming", eight (8) black and white photos with Haynes Inc. stamped descriptions on the reverse, one large format photo of an original Haynes photograph "#10124 Great Fall from Below, 308 Ft., by Haynes, St. Paul", Yellowstone National Park, original "Haynes Picture Shops Yellowstone Park, Wyoming" stickers, a 1937 "Haynes Pictures Numerical List" of photographs, three (3) original unused Haynes Studios Bozeman envelopes, and lastly, a cancelled personal check dated 1888 for the First National Bank of Helena, Montana one year before Montana was granted statehood, the check bears an etched vignette of Yellowstone Park at the top left corner. The condition of this wonderful collection is good overall, no obvious marring noted. Largest item measures 8.5"W x 11"L, smallest is 1.25"W x 2.5"L, combined weight of the collection is U6oz.
