Featured in this lot is this Yellowstone National Park Haynes Collection, circa 1920s to 1968. The first designated national park in the United States, Yellowstone Park has captured the imagination of millions upon millions of people from all over the world. From stunning geologic formations to the thousands of wild animals that call Yellowstone home, Yellowstone was brought to the world's attention through the photographs of early explorers like Frank Jay Haynes. Haynes, known as F. Jay or the Professor to almost all who knew him, was a professional photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs the settlement and early history of the great Northwest. He became both the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railway and of Yellowstone National Park as well as operating early transportation concessions in the park. His photographs were widely published in articles, journals, and books, and turned into stereographs and postcards in the late 19th and early 20th century. Included in this collection are two hand coloured photos of the East Entrance Golden Gate of Yellowstone Park, seven (7) black and white photos with Haynes Inc. stamped descriptions on the reverse, a "Merry Christmas from Lida Haynes" photo sleeve for a photo of Old Faithful by Lida (photo not included); Lida was Jack Haynes daughter and purchasing agent for the Haynes Photo Shop, operated by her father, in Yellowstone Park. Also included are a stack of original "Haynes Picture Shops Yellowstone Park, Wyoming" stickers, three (3) original unused Haynes Studios Bozeman envelopes, a price card for "Haynes Hand-painted photographs of Yellowstone National Park", and lastly, a 1937 "Haynes Pictures Numerical List" of photographs.
