Included in this lot is ths 1869 Leather King James Bible, Oxford University Press, London, UK. Bible is dated on the preface page to the New Testament. The King James Version (KJV), English translation of the Bible, was published in 1611 under the auspices of King James I of England. The translation had a marked influence on English literary style and was generally accepted as the standard English Bible from the mid-17th to the early 20th century. To settle disagreements over reforms in the Church of England and respond to pressure from the Puritans, King James in 1604 approved a new translation of the Bible, primarily because he knew that it would reinforce his image as a political and spiritual leader. This leather bound hardcover Bible has gold gilt stamped geometric designs on covers and spine, gold gilt stamped front cover medallion with the words "Holy Bible" in the center. Covers edges are trimmed in brass with a brass closure. Spine loose. Intact gold gilt top, bottom and fore edge pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing throughout. Measures 3.5"W x 5.25"L x 1.25"D.
