Featured in this lot is this 1888 first edition Marvels of the New West by William Thayer. This book is a vivid portrayal of the stupendous marvels in the vast wonderland west of the Missouri River. There are six books in this one volume comprising of Marvels of Nature, Marvels of Race, Marvels of Enterprise, Marvels of Mining, Marvels of Stock-Raising, and Marvels of Agriculture that is graphically and truthfully described. William M. Thayer was a prolific author and lecturer, known for writing biographies, moral tales, and travel literature. Marvels of the New West is one of his well-known works, and it provides a detailed account of the landscapes, natural wonders, and burgeoning cities of the American West during the late 19th century. The book was illustrated with numerous engravings, which were common in such works of the period. The 1888 publication marks the first time this book was made available to the public, capturing the fascination with the American frontier during that era. Subsequent editions and reprints followed, but the 1888 edition is considered the original first edition. The condition of this of this book shows some wear to the leather cover in the corners and along the spine and shows some browning to the pages consistent with the age of the book. The measurements of this book is 9 7/8" x 7 1/8" x 2 1/8". The collective weight of this book is 4lb.
