For your consideration is a 1924 edition of “Cowboys North and South” by Will James. This is a profusely illustrated copy with illustrations by the author. The book is a missive, being a firsthand story telling of the author’s experience at cow camp and working the range as a cowboy. Will James' first book is a series of short stories about cowboy life in the real and actual West as it truly was between the 1870's and the early years of the 20th century. These stories, in colorful words and striking illustrations, portrayed the true working West rather than the Hollywood variety. All of the eight short stories in the book were previously printed in magazines. Seven of them appeared first in Scribner's Magazine and the last one was printed in “The Saturday Evening Post" (Frazier). William Roderick James (1892-1942) was a Canadian-American artist and writer of the American West. He is known for writing Smoky the Cowhorse, for which he won the 1927 Newbery Medal, and numerous "cowboy" stories for adults and children. His artwork, which predominantly involved cowboy and rodeo scenes, followed "in the tradition of Charles Russell, and much of it was used to illustrate his books. In 1992, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The condition of this book is good with some wear to the cover and the corners of the cover, but it shows good, overall condition for its age. The measurements of this book are 5.5W" x 8.25"L x .75"D.
