This is a fabulous beaded pipe bag from the Northern Cheyenne dating to the 19th Century from a prominent collection. The lot is comprised of Indian tanned hide with yellow ocher / ochre mineral pigment painted finish and is adorned with sinew sewn period 19th century glass trade seed beads with a classic geometric design. The bag has wonderful frilly fringes. The beadwork shows colors of greasy green, cobalt, red white heart, Cheyenne pink, chalk white, and faceted brass metal in an intricate design. The bag is well kept with some slight stiffness but mostly supple preserved condition.
Provenance: From a prominent ex-Bozeman private collection who purchased the majority of his collection from Cowan's, Skinner, Bonhams, Morphy's, Sotheby's, March in Montana, North American Auction and other well revered auction houses. Measures overall are 33 3/4" x 6 5/8".
