This is a truly historic and artistically stunning,19th-century parlfeche polychrome painted war bonnet case from the Northern Plains in a massive, rare size. The piece exhibits an unusually large size and shows parfleche rawhide hide that is Indian tanned hide sewn and is covered in beautiful polychrome mineral pigment painted geometric designs on both sides as well as the lid and bottom. The appears to be from the Apsaalooke / Apsáalooke Crow. The lid, bottom and side have long Indian tanned hide fringes that truly set the piece apart. The artwork shows colors of red, green, blue, yellow, with black outline and with prominent thick Indian tanned hide fringes beautifully hanging from the bottom. This is quite possibly one of the best 1800's era war bonnet cases offered for public sale. The piece is well preserved with rich coloring and no major damages or loss. The piece shows the correct wear and loss to the paint that would be expected on such an early and authentic example. Measures overall as displayed 64-inches long, the case without fringes is 22-inches long by 7-inches wide by 6.5-inches deep. Of the other examples previously offered, this appears to be one of, if not the largest and would have held and impressive feathered headdress or war bonnet. From the same collection as the bonnet case sold by our company earlier this year for nearly $3,000 being slightly smaller (this example being slightly bigger).
