For your consideration is a First Edition of "Life on the Mississippi" by Mark Twain, 1883, publisher James R. Osgood and Company, Boston. Life on the Mississippi is a classic memoir by Mark Twain, published in 1883, that chronicles his experiences as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the Civil War and his return to the river years later. It blends autobiography, travelogue, and social commentary, offering a vivid, humorous, and sometimes melancholy look at the steamboat era, its colorful characters, and the changing landscape of the American South, serving as a companion piece to Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain (1835-1910), he pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was a seminal American author, humorist, and lecturer often called the "father of American literature". He is most celebrated for his novels set along the Mississippi River, particularly The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the latter of which is frequently cited as the "Great American Novel". The brown cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in preserved condition, stamped floral designs on front cover, front cover vignette of of a pipe smoking man sitting on hay bales at the pier with a paddlewheeler sailing past on the river in the background. Spine vignette is of a ship's pilot at the steering wheel. Gold gilt is still bright and clean. Scuffing and fabric splits exhibited on cover edges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing throughout, boards separated from the pages. Measures 5.75"W x 9"L x 1.75"D, weight is 2lb, 10oz.
