Presented in this lot is an Antique Afghan Mahal DZ Wool Pile Rug. Named after Mahallat in Southwestern Iran, Mahal designed rugs have been made in a variety of countries including Afghanistan. Handmade rugs have been produced in what is modern day Afghanistan for centuries, as Afghanistan became a haven for carpet-weaving nomadic tribes pushed further and further out of their traditional lands by greater powers. This beautiful handmade Antique Afghan Mahal DZ Wool pile rug has a cotton foundation and features floral, curling arabesque and traditional tribal and village motifs with luxurious vegetable dye colours of cream, red, yellow, light and dark blue, pink, espresso brown, and light green. Double-banded inner borders with double outer borders of red and blue fields with motifs, central medallions of floral and traditional motifs against red, blue, and cream colour background fields and cream fringe on both ends. The overall condition of this Afghan rug is good with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this Afghan rug are approximately 80"W x 96"L.
