For your consideration is an Extremely Rare Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong and Elizabeth Custer Photograph, circa 1873-1876. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. A museum tag is affixed, labeled "1396-87 O'Dell". The photograph of their home interior at Fort Abraham Lincoln, North Dakota shows their Living Room, Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer turning pages of music at the piano. Behind him are a number of other men and women as well as Captain Thomas Custer, younger brother of Lt. Colonel Custer, standing in front of the book shelves adjacent to the archway. Identified from left to right are Boston Custer, Mrs. Margaret Custer Calhoun, 2nd Lt. Winfield S. Edgerly, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Custer, Mr. Leonard Swett, 2nd Lt. Richard E. Thompson, Miss Nellie Wadsworth, 1st Lt. Thomas W. Custer, Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, and Miss Emily Wartson. The photograph is labeled with the typewritten description on the face, "Gen. & Mrs. Custer at piano in the Custer home a Fort Lincoln. Tom Custer to the right of the arch with head in front of book case." The reverse is labeled, "Custer Livingroom", and typed description, "General and Mrs. Custer at piano in the Custer home at Ft. Lincoln. Tom Custer to right of arch with head in front of bookcase." The photograph is mounted in a gold gilt stylized wood frame, slight scuffing noted to frame edges. Wall hanger hardware affixed to reverse. Photograph appears in very nice preserved condition. Visible image measures 4.5"W x 6.25"L, frame is 5.25"W x 7"L x .5"D.
