Featured in this lot is this Arizona Territory stagecoach strongbox Yuma, Arizona found circa 19th century and was displayed in the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The strongbox features a wonderfully and professionally forged construction that shows a reinforced side walling construction with a heavy door that features a ring handle and shows side handles made from the same heavy construction. The strong box was found in the desert near Yuma, Arizona and comes with an original museum tag that reads as follows: Stage Strong Box Found on the Desert near Yuma, AZ. In the 19th century Arizona Territory, stagecoach strong boxes, typically made of reinforced iron and secured with heavy locks, were essential for safely transporting gold, silver, and bank notes across dangerous routes. Their presence deterred some thefts and allowed Wells Fargo and other express companies to operate with greater confidence despite the ever-present threat of highwaymen. The condition of this Arizona Territory strongbox is preserved with a large hole in one of the side walling and shows a heavy patina adorning the strongbox consistent with age and exposure to the elements but otherwise is in preserved condition.
