For your consideration is this Batty Brothers powder flask with a powder output measuring nozzle circa 1847-1858. In the 1800s, The Batty Brothers was a firm that provided the US government with powder flasks. Immigrants from Sheffield, England, Joseph H. and John T. Batty created the renowned business. The United States government hired a number of private businesses, including The Batty Brothers, to produce powder flasks for the armed forces. New England, the nation's most industrialized region at the time, was where the Batty Brothers were located. The flask shows an image of a man standing over a deer he has just hunted. He is holding a rifle and has a powder flask slung around his waist as he looks down at the deer. In the background is a large tree and the hunters dog, low to the ground. The adjustable output measuring nozzle is marked on the side reading, "Batty". The nozzle can be adjusted to three different outputs or drams, usually from 3 1/4 to 2 1/2. The output nozzle and spring loaded cover are in good working condition. The powder flask shows a nice patina from its age and use over the years, showing signs of wear but no signs of major damage is noted. The powder flask measures 7 7/8" L x 3 5/16" W x 1 1/4" D and weighs 6 ounces.
