Featured in this lot is this original counter top display case from the Murphy Dolan Mercantile shop in Lincoln, New Mexico, the same building where Billy The Kid escaped jail. The Murphy-Dolan Mercantile, formally known as "Murphy & Dolan Mercantile and Banking," and nicknamed "The House," was a dominant force in Lincoln County, New Mexico, during the 1870s, particularly during the Lincoln County War. The store, owned by Lawrence Murphy and James Dolan, initially operated at Fort Stanton before moving to Lincoln. Murphy and Dolan's business practices, including charging exorbitant prices and controlling commerce, led to their downfall and the start of the conflict. Billy the Kid escaped from the Lincoln County, New Mexico jail on April 28, 1881, killing two deputies on duty. The jail was located above the Murphy Dolan Mercantile Shop. He escaped capture until July 14, when he was ambushed and slain by Sheriff Pat Garrett at Pete Maxwell's property. It was manufactured by Steele & Walker in St. Joseph, Missouri and features a mirror back to reflect light back onto the items in the display case. The front features a small metal plate towards the bottom reading, "Steele & Walker, St. Joseph, MO". It shows good condition overall with some wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. It measures 23 1/4" L x 34 1/4" W x 12" H. Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona.
