The lot features a Navajo silver Cerrillos Turquoise money clip owned by Sheriff Pat Garrett, dated to circa 1880-1900’s from the ex-collections of Pat Garrett, Jarvis Garrett, R.E.M. Western Relics,, Bobby McNellis, John McNellis and the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum. This is a nice early representation of Navajo silversmithing and is set with an early turquoise stone from the Cerrillos Turquoise mine. The money clip features raised silver loops which surround the large sawtooth bezel mounted turquoise cabochon. Reverse has a stamped "G". Patrick “Pat” Floyd Jarvis Garrett (1850-1908) was an American Old West lawman, bartender and customs agent best known for killing Billy the Kid. He was the Sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, as well as Doña Ana County, New Mexico. Prior to becoming a lawman, Garrett was a bartender at Beaver Smith’s saloon in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. It was at the saloon that Garrett met and often gambled with William Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. Letter included on R. E. M. Western Relics letterhead is from John McNellis, Vice President of El Paso Saddlery Company. El Paso Saddlery had outlaws Black Jack Ketchum and John Wesley Hardin, as well as lawmen Bat Masterson and Pat Garrett as a clients. The letter traces ownership of the money clip from Pat Garrett to Garrett's youngest son, Jarvis, who was Vice President - Public Relations for R.E.M. Western Relics, a subsidiary of El Paso Saddlery. Also included is an enlarged copy of Jarvis's business card. The money clip is in nicely preserved condition. A rich patina is observed throughout. Measures 1"W x 2"L approximately, cabochon is .625"W x .875"L, weight is 28.7 gms.
