Featured in this lot is a Black Forest Shield Wall Clock with Exposed Movement, circa 1840-1890. Shield clocks are beautiful and elegant creations that were made most popular in the German Black Forest. The design of a shield clock is very basic. Each features a square clock case or shield with a semicircle located on top. The wooden shield of most shield clocks is handmade. Shield clocks have been manufactured since the late 18th century. During the middle of the 19th century, the German Black Forest shield clocks became very popular and are still quite a collector’s item today. During the 19th century, when they were first becoming popular, many designers produced pictures and decorations on the clocks by transferring pictures. This shield clock painted wood face has Roman numerals, floral decoration in each corner, upper picture is of a mountain lake scene with castles perched on hilltops, sailboats in the distance with a small steam traversing in the foreground, a woman is visible walking along a road close to the shore. Dial face is detached as are clock hands and chain, original manufacturer labels attached to back of rear clock panel. Dial face paint exhibits cracking, crazing and chipping, wood face exhibits splitting and repair evidence. Unknown if movement functions. Measures with face attached 9.75"W x 13.5"H x 5.5"D; weight approximate 3lb, 12oz
