The lot features an original Blackfoot Native American Indian Grizzly Bear Claw necklace from Chief Bull dating to circa 1940-1950. Chief Bull, also known as Chief Richard Sanderville or Chief Richard Benedict Sandoval Sanderville, was born on May 2, 1866 in Fort Benton, Chouteau County, Montana and was married to Many Spotted Horses (also known as Annie Sanderville or Mrs. Bull). Chief Bull and Many Spotted Horses were some of the more well known Piegan (also known as the Pikuni, Pikani, and Piikani) Blackfoot or Blackfeet tribal members with various photographs being shown of the pair, especially Chief Bull in the Montana Historical Society records (some digital copies are shown). Chief Richard Sanderville / Chief Bull died at Heart Butte, Pondera County, Montana on February 25, 1951. The piece shows an original museum or collection tag that is hand marked, “BJ.JJ / B-234”. Provenance: From a large Native American weapons and beadwork collection in Great Falls, Montana. Comes with the original collection or museum receipt labeled with the exact same identification number as on the tag. The paperwork from the consignor is marked “B.234. BLACKFOOT CHIEF BULL. BJ.JJ”. The necklace shows an Indian tanned hide construction with eighteen (18) Grizzly Brown Bear claws, various hand turned stone trade beads and red / green resin beads. The necklace measures 22.5” long circumference and the claws range from being 2 1/8”L to 1 3/8”L.
